JCDA’s October Business Spotlight - Ellsworth Music Supply & Repair
October 31, 2022
Maryland native Brian Ellsworth moved his family to Shepherdstown, WV in 1989. For the next eleven years, he commuted back and forth to Silver Spring for his job at Dale Music Co. When he could no longer stand the long commute, he found a job in the Eastern Panhandle. In the year he worked locally, he realized there was a need in Jefferson County for a quality music store and private teaching institution. Having experience in the music business and as an educator, Brian knew he could establish an entity that would contribute to the cultural well-being and growth of Jefferson County.
Ellsworth Music opened in 2000 and is a retail store offering band and orchestral instruments for beginners to advanced. Their school of music has also been very successful with three hundred or more students and thirty instructors to teach any instruments. Brian knows having the best equipment possible, with the best instruction available is essential to success. In addition to the more common instruments, there is also instruction available for bagpipe, ukulele, music theory, voice, jazz improvisation and jazz theory. “We believe that anyone at any age can learn to play and enjoy the musical instrument of their choice” explained Brian. This is good news for any student but especially those who want to start a little later in life. You’re never too old, and it’s never too late to learn something new.
With the band programs in Jefferson County as well as the programs in the neighboring states of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia, the instrument rental and repair side of the business is also robust. Repairs are done on the premises by skilled technicians, sometimes minor repairs can be done while you wait, and every job is guaranteed.
As Jefferson County has grown, so has Ellsworth Music. The store currently has over eight hundred instruments on rental. Rachel Allen, Band Director, and music teacher at Charles Town Middle School noted, “The Eastern Panhandle is a very musical community. Many school music programs, private music teachers, churches and professional musicians rely on our local music store, Ellsworth Music, for their musical needs. Ellsworth Music provides instrument rentals and purchases, repairs, accessories, and even private lessons for all instruments and voice types. Brian Ellsworth, the owner of Ellsworth Music, has been in business for 22 years and has over 50 years in the music industry. He is a wealth of knowledge and loves serving his community with his local business. As a middle school band director, I know he and his business have made my job and program much more successful. I am so thankful for him and his business.”
Ellsworth is currently located at 217-6 Oak Lee Drive in Ranson, WV. After having two stores for the first ten years of business to service Jefferson County, Brian is happy that this location is centrally located to accommodate the county’s musical community.
Brian’s advice to entrepreneurs, “I encourage anybody with a dream or vision to pursue it. Follow your heart for inspiration and direction, have faith in your intellect to make prudent and wise decisions.” Jefferson County and the regional community are thankful for Brian and his team for serving our musical needs. We wish Ellsworth Music many more years of continued success.
