First Solar-Powered Hotel in West Virginia Opens

April 4, 2016

The first solar-powered hotel in West Virginia has opened in Harpers Ferry. Matt Knott, owner of River Riders Inc., celebrated the commissioning of the new solar energy system on March 23 at his recently acquired Quality Hotel Conference Center property.

Mountain View Solar of Berkeley Springs designed and installed the solar energy system, which is the third largest in West Virginia. The 289 solar panels cover the back side of the hotel's roof to get the best sun exposure. A display screen in the hotel's lobby shows visitors the energy output of the solar system. The solar panels will produce 82.36kW and are estimated to save $10,000 or more per year in electricity costs. An electric vehicle charger is also available in the parking lot, allowing guests to recharge their electric/hybrid cars during their stay.

Other improvements completed or underway at the hotel include renovations to the rooms, restaurant, and conference facility as well as expanded amenities and activity offerings.

The Jefferson County Development Authority put Knott in touch with the West Virginia Small Business Development Center (WVSBDC). Staff from WVSBDC worked with him to develop a business plan and secure loans for the project.
