Strategic Location

Jefferson County is the easternmost county in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia and centrally located in the Mid-Atlantic business corridor. While its most distinctive location trait is its proximity to the metropolitan areas of Washington, DC, and Baltimore, Maryland, the county is a strategic and relevant locale in and of itself. The county is made up of 212 square miles of beautiful West Virginia woodlands, rivers, and growing cities, including Charles Town, Harpers Ferry, Shepherdstown, Ranson, and Bolivar. The county is bounded by the Potomac River and Maryland on the north; the Blue Ridge Mountains and Loudoun County, Virginia, on the east; Clarke County, Virginia, on the south; and Berkeley County, West Virginia, on the west. In fact, Jefferson County is so close to these highly saturated areas that it is included as a part of the Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area managed by the United States Census Bureau.

Jefferson County’s proximity to the active cities of Washington, DC, and Baltimore, Maryland, provides major employers in our area access to the distribution opportunities and highly competitive workforce of a major metropolitan area with the small town charm and relaxed energy of an idyllic American setting.

This combination attracts major federal agencies, such as the Department of Homeland Security, a diverse cross-section of companies and national and international scholars conducting cutting-edge research. These scientific organizations and government agencies deeply benefit from the immediacy of Washington, DC’s extensive embassies and federal agencies, prestigious universities and colleges, and international travel opportunities, creating a comfortable oasis within driving distance of everything a growing business could possibly need.

Jefferson County is not only noted for its proximity to the nation’s capital, but also its access to major Eastern markets via nearby highways such as Interstate 81, 70, and 95. Its location pushes closely into the borders of Northern Virginia and Southern Maryland, making an ideal location for businesses seeking affordable proximity to these major markets without the downsides of cost, commute, or congestion.
